I fully support and believe in strengthening our arts and culture, but we must also build a strong, diversified and sustainable economy or one day there could be no residents left to populate that arts and culture aspect of our community. This post was not meant to be an indictment of Detroit but rather present evidence that community demise can and does happen, and that we are at even greater risk than most communities given our heavy reliance on a sole industry and remote location. The question is not if it is possible, as it certainly is, but rather how do we create sustainability in order to foster and continue our growth as a community, including our arts and culture?Theresahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14217715252564049451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6586607118525088475.post-87107491489556666622014-03-09T21:10:11.059-07:002014-03-09T21:10:11.059-07:00I am from the greater Detroit area - and I worked ...I am from the greater Detroit area - and I worked in the city. What happened there has a great many causes that do not exist here in the Fort McMurray area. I am not saying that it could not happen - just that it would not happen in the same way. Also, some of those photos are of places that have since been restored. Please check out the Detroit Opera House and how they restored it - I was lucky enough to work for Michigan Opera Theatre for several years prior to the opening of the Detroit Opera House, sing at its inaugural concert (with Luciano Pavarotti!) and then perform on its beautiful stage for several years thereafter. Yes, much of Detroit is still derelict, but with community efforts, and the love of the people, its renaissance will come. As for my new home, the Mac, please, let us continue with community building - and make this place so wonderful, that we are the pride of our nation. We are wonderful - together we can avoid any chance of this becoming a ghost town. We must continue to support the arts, aboriginal initiatives, education, sports and family events. Shall we begin with reinstating the Visual and Performing Arts program and the Music Instrument Repair program at Keyano College? That would be a step in the right direction.Kimerica Parrnoreply@blogger.com
