You wrote about it so beautifully. It takes a brave spirit to undertake such a project, what with the biased and carefully cultivated disapproval in Western society of things Muslim. When I first became a Muslimah in Canada and decided to wear a headscarf on the street, I felt very intimidated by the hostile stares of people who didn't know me, not that I CARED what they thought, but the VIBES sent our toward me were very uncomfortable. I was delighted a couple of years later when I moved to Ghana and found hijab wearers to never even get a second glance here. Families here are huge and very extended, and there are very few that don't contain a few Muslims if the rest of the family is Christian. Tolerance is the cornerstone upon which the edifice of the Peace we enjoy in Ghana is built, which is so refreshing. We can only wish that World Hijab Day leads to a broadening of communication and understanding between Muslims and Non-Muslims in 'The West' and that all women can find it in themselves to come together and value each other - with you as a wonderful example!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6586607118525088475.post-55548596515941374132014-02-03T14:36:16.253-08:002014-02-03T14:36:16.253-08:00But of course not secure enough to offer such crit...But of course not secure enough to offer such critical opinion with your name attached, Anonymous. Thanks for visiting the blog, and rest assured that in no way did I intend or imply condescension to those who are oppressed, despite your chosen interpretation of my words.Theresahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14217715252564049451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6586607118525088475.post-39501317185116096342014-02-03T13:28:24.619-08:002014-02-03T13:28:24.619-08:00Actually, Theresa, my basic reading skills allowed...Actually, Theresa, my basic reading skills allowed me to read the words "the idea that ANYONE could force some of these women to do ANYTHING is not only deeply patronizing but laughable" [capitalization mine] and recognize it as a rather hackneyed phrase. Im very glad you are secure in your friends particular lack of vulnerability to ANYTHING due to their special prowess, but I find it to be a condescending remark in view of those that ARE oppressed, and yet are of no less merit to deserve to be immune to it. Perhaps it's nit-picky, but since I stumbled upon your blog, and you appear to be a professional writer, I felt secure in offering my critical opinion. At no point have I suggested or implied that those who are forced to do so are lacking in any such regard. Since its obvious to you, and presumably everyone else, that these friends have a special quality that denies any would be enforcers? I am a part time Hijab wearer, on a need be basis, but yesterday I did think of handling it full time. Maybe some day! But your blog nailed it all.
