Rationality and logic, rather than raw emotion, should form the basis of any analysis of this question. I repeat: by no reasonable standard do the traffic counts on Highway 63 justify twinning. This is a road that links a small town, Fort McMurray, to Edmonton via absolutely nowhere else. The idea that this road should meet the same design criteria as, say, Hwy 2 between Calgary and the U.S. border is patently ludicrous.

That said, I do accept that the roadway needs to be resurfaced and, crucially, widened to accommodate a passing lane. In general terms Hwy 63 should be upgraded to 2+1 standard, minus the dividing barrier.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2+1_roadVal Hayesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6586607118525088475.post-51661163256816022712012-05-13T20:34:59.884-07:002012-05-13T20:34:59.884-07:00The level of traffic does not exsist to justify tw...The level of traffic does not exsist to justify twinning?!? Val you have to be kidding me! I have driven to and from and in Calgary on numerous occasions and I lived in Fort Mac for 17 years, you must not travel 63 on a regular basis like my husband does or you would know as I do that your statement is beyond wrong! There will Always be unsafe drivers on every road. You can't possibly say that twinning 63 wouldn't improve the chances for those Thousands who drive it with care and caution! If you find yourself driving on a difficult / undivided / poor stretch of highway and/or in unfavourable conditions, you alter your driving behaviour accordingly. I was driving on 63 recently and found it empty relative to highways in Calgary. I don't think twinning can be justified in monetary terms - the level of traffic simple does not exist for a twinned highway. Increase patrolling, local educational initiatives, find a few selfish idiot drivers and take away their license - make an example out of them - and people will smarten up.

Highway 63 has never, ever, killed or injured one single person. I am suggesting this for a number of very obvious reasons; others have tried unsuccessfully, great economic value to all Albertans, all prior safety concerns have been ignored and some of us are truly ashamed of the needless loss of life. I have personally driven it only once, and it was like a very long race track. I had to do minimum 120kph to keep from holding traffic up, and was passed by
vehicles too numerous to count. Keep speaking, and doing
interviews, I can assure you the whole province, and country are beside you Theresa. As far as the economics are concerned, I agree with you, but beyond that, the royalties paid by the oil production companies since around 1978 have way more than exceeded the cost of building up that highway. The province owes the people of Fort McMurray a
highway, and probably much more.Haroldnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6586607118525088475.post-468746262851835222012-04-30T21:21:08.861-07:002012-04-30T21:21:08.861-07:00Theresa, I am so privledged to have met you 8 yrs ...Theresa, I am so privledged to have met you 8 yrs ago and to have you in my life. The emotions heard through your writings are exactly what people need to hear, the extension of those affected by this tragedy beyond those directly involved.

I applaud you on being a Champion for this cause as it affects all of us one way or another. I am sure I am not alone on saying this Theresa.

My close call came when my young family was passed and the vehicle lost control and ended up in the ditch upsidedown many years ago. My kids were young then as well and I thought of how this person almost affected us, but, I summoned up the strength without to much thought and went to that vehicle to help that person out of his vehicle. He was lucky, He was not hurt seriously, just his vehicle. had there been another vehicle around it could have turned far worse.

So, keep up the good fith, we are behind you!

Michael DurocherAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
